Veterinary Council of Nigeria Hosts ECOWAS Members at 10th Annual Meeting of the ECOWAS Regional Animal Health Networks

Abuja, Nigeria – AIG Aishatu Abubakar Baju, mni, President of the Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN), hosted members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at the Council's headquarters in Abuja during the 10th Annual Meeting of the ECOWAS Regional Animal Health Networks.



The meeting, which was held on the 14th of November 2024, brought together stakeholders from across the ECOWAS region to discuss critical issues related to animal health and regional integration. President Baju successfully rallied support for prioritizing regional collaboration and reciprocity to enhance animal health standards across member states.



Attendees were particularly impressed by the VCN's progress in digitizing key operational sectors, demonstrating Nigeria's commitment to modernizing veterinary services and improving animal welfare.

Dr. Vivian Iwar, Executive Director of the ECOWAS Regional Animal Health Centre, highlighted the meeting's two main objectives:

  1. Increased and impactful multilateral collaborations across ECOWAS countries: Fostering stronger partnerships and knowledge sharing among member states to address regional animal health challenges.
  2. Improved workforce and quality Veterinary service delivery in member countries: Enhancing the skills and capacity of veterinary professionals to ensure high-quality animal healthcare services across the region.

The workshop was officially opened by Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, the Minister of Livestock Development, who emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in safeguarding animal health and promoting economic growth within the ECOWAS community.

The 10th Annual Meeting of the ECOWAS Regional Animal Health Networks served as a vital platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange, reinforcing the commitment of member states to improve animal health and welfare across West Africa.
