Veterinary Council of Nigeria Denies Accreditation to Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Benin

The Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN) announces that the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Benin, has been denied accreditation. This decision follows a recent comprehensive assessment by the VCN, which found the faculty falling short of the required standards for veterinary education in Nigeria.

Consequences of this Decision

  • Halt on Graduation: The VCN will not induct any graduates from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Benin until the faculty achieves the required standards and is granted accreditation.
  • Suspension of Admissions: The faculty is prohibited from admitting new students until accreditation is obtained.
  • Student Relocation: Current students will be relocated to other accredited veterinary faculties in Nigeria to ensure the continuation of their studies.
  • Potential Loss of Academic Progress: Students may face a potential loss of an academic year due to the identified deficiencies in the program.

VCN's Commitment to Upholding Standards

The VCN remains committed to upholding the highest standards of veterinary education and practice in Nigeria. This decision, while difficult, is necessary to ensure that all veterinary graduates in Nigeria are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to provide competent and ethical veterinary care.

The VCN is working closely with the University of Benin and other stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition for the affected students. We understand that this news is disappointing for the students and faculty of the University of Benin, but we are confident that this measure is in the best interests of the veterinary profession and animal health in Nigeria.

About the Veterinary Council of Nigeria

The Veterinary Council of Nigeria is the statutory body responsible for regulating the practice of veterinary medicine in Nigeria. The VCN is committed to protecting animal health and welfare and promoting public health through the regulation of the veterinary profession.

Thank you.
