VCN Inducts 12 New Veterinary Graduates, Emphasizes Professionalism

Abuja, Nigeria - September 11, 2024 - The Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN) inducted 12 new graduates from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Jos, in a ceremony held on Wednesday, 11th September, 2024.

In her address, AIG Dr. Aishatu Abubakar-Baju, President of the VCN, represented by Dr. Gani Enahoro, an elected member of the council's board, underscored the significance of maintaining high standards within the veterinary profession.

Dr. Abubakar-Baju outlined the three fundamental pillars of veterinary practice in Nigeria:

  • Animal Health: safeguarding the health and welfare of animals through preventive care, disease control, and treatment.
  • Animal Production: promoting sustainable livestock production to ensure food security and economic growth.
  • Public Health: protecting human health by preventing and controlling zoonotic diseases (diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans).

She further highlighted the establishment of the new Ministry of Livestock Development, emphasizing its potential to create greater opportunities for veterinarians in Nigeria.

"Veterinary practice is not just a vocation; it is a profession," Dr. Abubakar-Baju asserted. "While a vocation may be something you do with a flexible approach, a profession demands knowledge, skills, and adherence to ethical standards."

Prof. Pwaveno Huladeino Bamaiyi, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Jos, congratulated the graduates on their accomplishments. He commended their perseverance in overcoming academic and personal challenges during their studies.

The induction ceremony marks the beginning of a new chapter for these 12 graduates as they embark on their careers as veterinarians. They join a community of professionals dedicated to protecting animal health, promoting sustainable livestock production, and safeguarding public health in Nigeria.
