Veterinary Council Leadership Pays Courtesy Visit to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation of Nigeria, George Akume

The leadership of the Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN), consisting of the President, AIG Ashatu Abubakar Baju, mni, the Vice President, Professor Matthew Adamu and Acting Registrar, Dr. Oladotun Fadipe, yesterday paid a courtesy visit to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation of Nigeria, George Akume to discuss critical issues aimed at enhancing the council's regulatory function and ultimately improving veterinary services in Nigeria.

The visit underscores the council's commitment to proactive engagement with stakeholders to foster collaboration and address challenges hindering the effective delivery of veterinary services in the country.

 During the meeting, the President highlighted the crucial role of the council in ensuring the quality and ethical standards of veterinary practice in Nigeria. She also emphasized the need for greater support and collaboration from various stakeholders to achieve the council's objectives.

The courtesy visit also provided a platform to discuss the renewed hope agenda of the current administration, particularly its focus on revitalizing the livestock sector through the establishment of the Ministry of Livestock Development. The VCN leadership expressed optimism about the potential impact of this initiative on veterinary services, recognizing the crucial role of veterinarians in ensuring the health and productivity of livestock. This renewed focus on livestock development aligns with the council's mission to promote animal health and welfare, thereby contributing to food security and economic growth in Nigeria.



Discussions further centered around several key areas, including:

  • Strengthening the council's capacity to effectively regulate the veterinary profession and enforce ethical standards.
  • Improving the quality of veterinary education and training in Nigeria.
  • Enhancing public awareness of the importance of veterinary services in safeguarding animal and human health.
  • Promoting research and development in the field of veterinary medicine.

The VCN leadership expressed her gratitude to the SGF for his warm reception and willingness to support the council's initiatives. And also assured the SGF of the council's commitment to working with all stakeholders to achieve the common goal of enhancing veterinary services in Nigeria.

The courtesy visit represents a positive step towards strengthening the regulatory framework of the veterinary profession in Nigeria. By fostering dialogue and collaboration, the VCN is paving the way for improved veterinary services and a healthier future for both animals and humans in the country.
